An ISBN (0395071224) was assigned with the 28th Printing.

No clear ‘Third Edition’ statement was added with the 24th Printing (or at any time during the print run). Aside from the revisions and resetting of the text, the original description for the 1951 Second Edition (introducing the change to Chapter Five) was permanently replaced with a new foreword (chiefly concerning the runes on ‘Thror’s Map‘). Additionally, for all printings of the Third Edition, the two maps were printed on pages towards the beginning and end of the book (for the earlier editions they were printed on endpapers).

Beginning with the 32nd Printing, a number line was used to indicate the print number.

The runes bordering the dust-jacket read: ‘THE HOBBIT OR THERE AND BACK AGAIN BEING THE RECORD OF A YEARS JOURNEY MADE BY BILBO BAGGINS OF HOBBITON COMPILED FROM HIS MEMOIRS BY J.R.R. TOLKIEN AND PUBLISHED BY HOUGHTON MIFFLIN AND CO’.

Jacket price: $3.95 (24th-26th Printing); $4.95 (27th-30th Printing); $6.95 (32nd-37th Printing); $8.95 (38th Printing); $11.95 (39th Printing). The 31st Printing was unpriced (one copy has been seen with ‘$5.95‘ written in, a likely retail price considering the previous and subsequent prices).
