Notes
J.R.R. Tolkien: A Descriptive Bibliography is the most comprehensive bibliography on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. The contents are as follows:

Foreword by Rayner Unwin
Introduction by Wayne G. Hammond
Section A: Books by J.R.R. Tolkien
Section B: Books edited, translated, or with contributions by J.R.R. Tolkien
Section C: Contributions to Periodicals
Section D: Published Letters and Excerpts
Section E: Art by J.R.R. Tolkien
Section F: Miscellanea
Section G: Translations

All sections list the publication details and contents of each work while certain sections expand on this information, occasionally in great detail. Tolkien’s key works are given the most attention and accounts are given of their composition and publication history. Lists of corrections and revisions to subsequent printings and editions are also supplied.

1st Printing: January 21, 1993 – 400 copies**
2nd Printing: 2002
3rd Printing: 2005
4th Printing: December, 2012

A second edition of this book has been in the works for over 20 years while Mr. Hammond has focused on (among other things) other Tolkien resources (equally indispensable). In the meantime Christina Scull (with Hammond contributing) has released 33 issues of The Tolkien Collector, an ‘occasional’ magazine that continued on from where A Descriptive Bibliography left off (1992). It gives entries for the more recent Tolkien publications as well as relevant articles. Often included was a section of ‘Addenda and Corrigenda to J.R.R. Tolkien: A Descriptive Bibliography‘. These entries can be found in the following issues: no. 2, pp. 26-27; no. 3, pp. 13-15; no. 4, pp. 14-16; no 5, pp. 26-27; no. 6, pp. 26-27; no. 7, pp. 21-22; no. 8, pp. 23-24; no. 9, pp. 20-21; no. 10, pp. 26-27; no. 11, pp. 22-23; no. 12, pp. 28-29; no. 13, pp. 20-22; no. 14, p. 24; no. 16, pp. 26-29; no. 17, pp. 27-29; no. 23, pp. 28-30; no 24, p. 27.

Almost every entry for pre-1993 publications on this site includes a reference to A Descriptive Bibliography where additional details can be found. It is an essential resource for any Tolkien collector! It is available new at: Oak Knoll’s website.

RRP: £50 / $94.00.

*In 1992 U.S. based Oak Knoll Press began co-publishing with the English firm St. Paul’s Bibliographies (which Oak Knoll later purchased in 1997).
