The print numbers for this edition begin with the 4th impression, possibly counting up from the three previous impressions of the Allen & Unwin 1949 First Edition, but more likely due to complications that arose between the Houghton Mifflin 1950 First Edition, the Nelson & Sons 1961 Edition and this 1965 edition. There was no 2nd or 3rd Printing noted or perhaps even issued in the U.S. Additionally, the dates above refer specifically to the U.S. Houghton Mifflin edition while the dates found on the copyright page pertain to the UK Allen & Unwin edition.* (Houghton Mifflin imported fully bound books from Allen & Unwin for at least up to the 7th Printing.)

Dust-jackets state the U.S. price either in the upper or lower right-hand corner of the inside flap. Many were price-clipped to remove the printed UK price or due to other price changes.

Many (if not all) 4th Impression copies were housed in 5th Impression dust-jackets.

Jacket price: $3.00; $6.95 by the 11th Impression.*

*According to records from Houghton Mifflin, a total of only seven printings were issued in the U.S. which differs from the eight released in the UK and as stated on the copyright page. It is therefore likely that either one of the eight impressions was not issued in the U.S. or that the records are incomplete.
