The 4,000 copies of this edition were ordered by Houghton Mifflin in 1983 from Allen & Unwin (Tolkien’s UK publisher). Although published simultaneously with the ‘Domestic’ Edition, it was manufactured first and contains a number of errors which were corrected for the ‘Domestic’ Edition.
The ‘Import’ Edition can be distinguished from the ‘Domestic’ Edition by differences on the copyright page (“Printed in Great Britain” vs. “Printed in the United States of America”), title page (year present vs. not present), and the placement of the illustration, ‘I Vene Kemen’ (printed on a plate facing page i vs. printed on an integral leaf, page 12). Their dust-jackets are identical.
