1st Printing: December?, 1984 – 5,000 copies
2nd Printing: 1986?

The binding size of the 2nd Printing was decreased to match that of the Easton Press edition of The Lord of the Rings (and later The Silmarillion). Additionally the 1st and 2nd Printings can be differentiated by the statements on their copyright pages (the 1st Printing has the word “reprinted” while the 2nd does not).

The 2nd Printing and further reprints have been sold continuously without change. Available new.

The runes on the front and back covers read: ‘STAND BY THE GREY STONE WHEN THE THRUSH KNOCKS DURIN’S DAY WILL SHINE UPON THE KEYHOLE, TH (Thrór)’. (The rune for the letter H in ‘when‘ is lacking its crossbars; this was corrected in 2008).

RRP: Sold in a set with The Lord of the Rings and (since 1999) The Silmarillion. Five volume set: $265 (2002); $370 (2016); $395 (by 2020).
